Dear beautiful mama-to-be (or new mama),

Last week, I met Sarah in our clinic. At 32 weeks pregnant, she stood in front of her mirror, tracing a line that had appeared down the middle of her growing belly. "Something's different," she said, worry crossing her face. "Is this normal?"

That line Sarah noticed is called diastasis recti – a natural part of pregnancy where our abdominal muscles gently separate to make room for our growing little ones. As both a researcher and a woman who's witnessed countless pregnancy journeys, I want to share what I wish every woman knew about this beautiful adaptation of our bodies.

Remember Maria? She came to us four months postpartum, frustrated that her core didn't feel the same. "I feel like my body is a stranger," she confided. Today, she's rediscovering her strength, not by fighting against her body's changes, but by understanding and working with them. She learned that healing isn't about rushing back to "normal" – it's about embracing a new normal that carries the story of bringing life into the world.

Here's what helped Maria and what might help you, too:

  • Think of your body like a book writing its own story. Each change has meaning and purpose.

  • Move in ways that feel good. Maria found that gentle walks and breathing exercises helped her feel connected to her body again.

  • Share your story. When Maria opened up to other moms in our community, she realized she wasn't alone.

Next time you look in the mirror, remember: those lines on your belly are like chapters in your motherhood story. They speak of strength, adaptation, and our incredible journey.
